Seeking Information

This website has been set up in order to direct people researching their individual or family history to information regarding their time at Browning House.

Please Note: That all individual family assessment information has safely been returned to the referring Local Authority.

Browning House has worked with families from 50 Local Authorities and each family’s individual file has been returned to the Local Authority that the Parent/s originated from. The contents of each file will vary with age, with older files having much less information than more recent cases.

We do not have any case file information from before 1967. However, we have records of family admission and discharge dates from 1938 to 2012.These files have been placed with Leeds City Council Fostering and Adoption Team.

Further information may be available through After Adoption Yorkshire or the Adoption and Fostering Department, part of the Children’s Social Services Team in Leeds.

Browning House - Notice of Closure

At the time of writing, Browning House is weeks away from closing. After 60 wonderful years we are unable to continue.

There has always been uncertainty around Browning House, and the organisation has faced many obstacles both financially and socially. But in this difficult and ever changing period, we cannot overcome the Political and economic climate that means that residential family assessments are no longer desirable. We don’t not believe that the need for Browning House has disappeared, rather that Local Authorities are unable to commission such services.

60 years of history is near impossible to capture, articulate and preserve, but we hope that this website goes some way towards recording what we can.

The changing face of Browning House

Browning House has changed dramatically since its official opening in 1952. Not only in the wide range of services it provided, but in its appearance.

Browning House has undergone several refurbishments and extensions and now, in 2012 is a collection of three buildings, the main Browning House residential centre, the outside nursery and the Jubilee Building.
